Annie Pirruccello PIA

My pieces often start and end as pure PIA: expressing the sounds, feelings, thoughts, sights, sensations, judgments that are occurring. This is most evident in the pastel and colored pencil examples. I have made many PIA pieces like this. Sometimes, however, I feel a strong pull to start putting something together, and the materials attract me and I simply start making something without knowing what it will be.

If there is any conceptual content or theme to it, that comes very late in the process and is not what is driving the piece. Lately, I notice that such moments can be informed by experiences that I am carrying with me. For example, I have made a number of golden Buddha figures recently, and they are clearly influenced by a visit to Tibet I made in 2009, where there are so many majestic golden Buddhas.
